The review
Bangkok is full of cafes that announce themselves with big signage, curated playlists, and a queue out the door. Knowhere is not that cafe. Tucked into the Phra Khanong neighbourhood, a short walk from the BTS station of the same name, it’s a place that most people barely notice.
You’ll walk through what feels like an entirely local stretch of Bangkok. You’ll even wonder if you’re going in the right direction. But keep the faith and the steps; you’ll get there! Here, daily life just goes on.
The ambience at Knowhere
This quaint cafe is built right into a neighbourhood area, very close to a khlong (waterway). The setting is compact and unhurried, with very limited indoor seating and a gravel-like walkway. Outdoor seating is available, though Bangkok’s heat means you’ll want to time your visit carefully if you plan to sit outside. Outdoor seats are also not the most comfortable, as they are all camping-ready furniture.
The coffee at Knowhere
The menu is limited, so don’t arrive hungry. But Knowhere does what it does well. The coffee is the clear focus here, and it shows. The beans are sourced carefully and produce a rich crema. You’ll need an iced coffee on a hot Bangkok afternoon to understand how delicious this can be.
The almond tart is worth ordering if you need something to eat alongside your drink, but keep expectations modest on the food front. Knowhere is a coffee destination first and foremost. They also don’t have a very wide food menu; think some cakes, tarts and maybe one or two pastry items.
Should you go?
If you enjoy wandering slightly off the tourist map, Knowhere is exactly the kind of find that makes Bangkok endlessly interesting. It’s not a place to build a half-day around; the seating is too limited and the menu too short. But as a stop on a longer exploration of the Phra Khanong area, it’s quietly excellent.
Here’s a bonus: If you’re into knitting and crafts, there’s a decent place selling yarns at very low prices just across the road from here. And if you walk further past this cafe, you’ll find a popular shio pan hidden in a corner.
Final thoughts
Knowhere is a little bit difficult to find, so you really have to be committed to finding this place. It’s located in a real neighbourhood part of the city, and doesn’t have much tourist footfall. If you’re looking for a place where you can get into your knitting, artwork, crafting or reading, then you can spend hours here. The reason we love it so much is that even though it’s not that far from the city, you feel quite hidden. =
