Cupcakes & Muffins: The best in town!

We love both muffins and cupcakes (we’re not prejudiced against the poor muffin, that gets the ‘ugly cupcake’ label due to its lumpy appearance).

Think about it – the best cupcakes are the ones with banana and nuts and chocolate, and it would kind of a weird combination to have if you were to put those ingredients together in a cupcake. So we have made a list; shiny, yummy cupcake outlets and muffin places too, so we acknowledge the entire cake-in-a-cup family.

Cupcakes

Plain Vanilla Bakery

We first came across this delicious bakery when they were a part of Rockstar over at the Macdonald House. With their standalone store in Holland Village, the folks here dole out one fascinatingly infectious cupcake flavor after another. What got us really hooked (like most of your cupcake fans out there) is the red velvet cupcake. We also urge you to try their carrot cupcake – not as popular as the other flavors perhaps and bordering very closely to muffins, the carrot cupcakes are wickedly delicious.

12 Cupcakes

So, how can we do an article on cupcakes and not discuss 12 cupcakes? This brand is almost everywhere now, which of course is a blessing. The name calls out for it, so every time our editor drops by 12 cupcakes, he picks up 12 cupcakes. This bakery does chocolate on chocolate like no other, with the cupcake sweetly titled ‘Chocolate Chocolate’. We also love the Espresso (coffee desserts, hello!?) and the chocolate banana, to settle our fruit and coffee cravings in the evenings.

Butter Studio

What caught our eye here was technically not the cupcakes, but a large slice of the Sea Salt Caramel Red Velvet Cake – it looks as sinfully good and spellbinding as it tastes. But let’s focus here: Cupcakes. Some of their unique (and forgotten in mainstream cupcakeries) flavors include Lavender and Rose – each cupcake is topped lusciously with flavored cream that is like a light kiss atop the cupcake. Pure, unbasterdised cupcake glory awaits you when stopping by the Butter Studio.

Muffins

Ugglimuffins

This muffin bakery here is embodiment of no frills, situated right smack in the heartlands is perhaps what you might not expect of a muffin specialty store. Cutely named, Ugglimuffins is blended right in with its fellow hawker stores in the coffee shop. Of course, after one of them you will then realize there is nothing ugly about them. The best part about them is that you can casually pop them into your mouth, without the fuss of paper cups of conventional muffins.

Since the coffee shop is rather big, locating the store might take quite a while but we suggest just that you follow your nose!

The Muffinry Bakery Café

This quaint café at Telok Ayer Street has yielded great reviews all over web, with a whopping 92% of votes at hungrygowhere.com and many bloggers singing nothing but praises for this café. Don’t mistake it for a muffin only place though, it serves pretty great tarts as well alongside with salads, lattes, smoothies and much more. The muffinry is a perfect place to cool-off from the summer heat when all you need is an ice cold glass of lemon tea. Free wi-fi makes this place and amazing alternative to Starbucks!
